X1 Powertrain for the North Bay
2027 BMW X1 Engine and Performance in Northern California
One 2.0-liter four in two states of tune, 241 hp or 312, and identical torque. What separates them.
The 2027 BMW X1 offers one engine in two states of tune: a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder making 241 horsepower, and BMW M's version of the same unit making 312. Both produce 295 lb-ft of torque, both run through a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and both drive all four wheels through xDrive. The structural fact buyers get wrong is that the M35i is not a bigger engine, and it does not make more torque. It makes more power higher up, in a car with different suspension underneath it.
We sell both at BMW of Napa Valley, and this page is the single home for the X1's powertrain. It covers each engine in full, the transmission and drivetrain, a side-by-side matrix, fuel, and which one suits which driver. Pricing and equipment live on the trims page.

Engine-by-Engine Breakdown
2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-4, the X1 xDrive28i
241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, for a BMW-estimated 6.2 seconds to 60 mph and a 130 mph limiter. What matters day to day is the torque figure, because it is identical to the M35i's: the pull you use merging onto Interstate 80 or climbing out of the valley is the same in both cars. This is the engine in every X1 on our lot, and it is the one that makes the X1 a sensible daily car rather than a compromise. Premium gasoline, 14.3-gallon tank.
2.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-4, the X1 M35i
312 horsepower and the same 295 lb-ft, for a BMW-estimated 5.2 seconds to 60 mph against the same 130 mph limiter. The 71 extra horsepower arrives at the top of the range rather than the bottom, which is why the M35i feels like the same car until you use it and then feels like a different one. BMW pairs it with Adaptive M Suspension, M Sport brakes and the M Sport exhaust with quad tips as standard, because the engine on its own is not the product. It is the only engine offered on the M35i and it is not available on the xDrive28i.
Transmissions and Drivetrains
One gearbox and one drivetrain across the range, which removes two decisions from the buying process. Every 2027 X1 uses a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and every 2027 X1 has xDrive all-wheel drive as standard equipment. Neither model is offered with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, a torque-converter automatic or a manual.
The M35i adds paddle shifters on the M steering wheel with a boost function. Performance Control is standard on both models: it brakes the inside wheels through a corner and sends more drive to the outside ones, which is what keeps a tall, short-wheelbase car tidy on the valley two-lanes. Hill Descent Control is standard on both.

2027 BMW X1 Fuel Economy and Range
Both engines take premium gasoline from a 14.3-gallon tank, and both drive all four wheels through the same gearbox, so nothing structural separates them at the pump. EPA ratings are published at fueleconomy.gov.

|---|---|---|---|
| X1 xDrive28i, 2.0L, 7-speed DCT | Premium gasoline | 14.3 gal | xDrive |

Which 2027 BMW X1 Engine Is Right for You?
- Most of your miles are commuting. The 241-horsepower xDrive28i. It makes exactly the same torque as the M35i, which is the part of an engine a commute uses. See X1 inventory.
- You drive Highway 29 or the Silverado Trail for the sake of it. The 312-horsepower M35i, and the Adaptive M Suspension that comes with it is as much of the reason as the engine.
- You want quicker without changing the car. There is no middle engine. The step is the M35i or nothing, which is unusually clean for a BMW range.
- You were looking for a six-cylinder or a hybrid. The X1 is a four-cylinder range. Our X1 vs X3 page covers the next SUV up.

We stock the X1 xDrive28i in depth on Auto Mall Parkway in Fairfield, at 2399 Auto Mall Pkwy off Interstate 80, and can factory-order an M35i built the way you want it. Napa, Vacaville, Vallejo, Suisun City and American Canyon are all a straightforward drive away. In a county where a morning can start damp off Suisun Marsh and an afternoon can run hot and dry inland, an engine that pulls the same at both ends of the day is worth more than a peak figure.
