The 2027 BMW 4 Series has four non-M models: 430i, 430i xDrive, M440i and M440i xDrive. What makes the price list look complicated is that each one is sold in more than one body, and the body changes the price more than the trim does. A 430i costs $51,200 as a Gran Coupe and $61,300 as a convertible, and that $10,100 gap is the same engine, the same equipment and the same eight-speed gearbox.

Below, the four models one at a time, then side by side on the numbers that separate them. BMW of Napa Valley in Fairfield stocks across the range, so the comparison below can be settled in the car rather than on the page.

The Short Version

  • 430i, from $51,200. 255 hp, rear-wheel drive, 31 mpg combined as a coupe. The volume car and the economy champion.
  • 430i xDrive, from $53,200. The same car with all-wheel drive and two tenths quicker to 60 mph.
  • M440i, from $75,200 as a convertible. 386 hp inline-six, rear-wheel drive.
  • M440i xDrive, from $69,100 as a coupe. The quickest non-M 4 Series at 4.2 seconds, and the one that comes loaded.

Both engines run a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for 2027. Alloy wheels are standard across the range, leather is an extra-cost choice on every 430i and M440i, and all four models use the same eight-speed Sport Automatic with paddle shifters and Launch Control.

2027 BMW 4 Series Trim-by-Trim

430i

255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four, rear-wheel drive, and the best fuel economy in the range at an EPA-rated 28 city / 36 highway / 31 combined in coupe form. It reaches 60 mph in 5.6 seconds in coupe form, 5.8 as a Gran Coupe and 6.0 as a convertible. The 430i is where most of the value sits: at $51,200 for the Gran Coupe it undercuts every other way into the car, and nothing about the cabin, the screens or the standard safety equipment is downgraded to get there.

430i xDrive

A $2,000 step on the coupe, and the only change is all-wheel drive. It buys two tenths to 60 mph, 5.4 seconds instead of 5.6, and costs one mile per gallon combined. On the hill roads between Napa and Vallejo in the wet half of the year, that is the version people come back for.

M440i

The 3.0-liter inline-six, 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. BMW breaks that figure down as 375 hp from the combustion engine plus up to 11 hp of electric drive. It runs to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds as a coupe or a Gran Coupe and 5.0 as a convertible, and it is the model that turns the 4 Series from a good car into a fast one. BMW's 386 hp figure is 375 hp from the combustion engine plus up to 11 hp of electric drive.

M440i xDrive

The same six with all-wheel drive, 4.2 seconds to 60 mph in coupe form, and the most complete equipment list in the range. Adaptive headlights, a heated steering wheel, remote engine start, the rear spoiler and a power trunk release are all standard here and optional or unavailable further down. At $69,100 for the coupe it is $15,800 above a rear-drive 430i coupe, which is a real step, and most of it is visible before you touch the throttle.

The weight column tells the story of the range. All-wheel drive adds 128 pounds to a 430i coupe and the six adds another 214 on top of that, and yet the M440i xDrive is a second and a half quicker. Fuel economy costs two combined mpg across the whole spread, which is less than most buyers expect.

What Every 2027 BMW 4 Series Has in Common

Every trim shares the same eight-speed Sport Automatic, the same curved display with navigation, real-time traffic, satellite radio and in-car internet, and the same standard safety equipment: blind-spot alert, a collision warning system, traction and stability control, and BMW's emergency and security services. Alloy wheels, heated mirrors, power front seats, folding rear seats and a leather-wrapped wheel are standard on all four. A surround-view camera is optional across the range, and so is leather upholstery. The fuel tank is 15.6 gallons on every one, and every 4 Series takes premium gasoline.

What that means practically is that no 4 Series feels like a stripped car. The differences below the M440i are power, drive and a short list of convenience items, not equipment level.

2027 BMW 4 Series Value Verdict

The 430i Gran Coupe at $51,200 is the value pick of the entire range and it is not close. It is the most accessible way into the lineup, it has four doors, it seats five where the coupe seats four, and it carries 16.6 cubic feet against the coupe's 15.5. Nothing about it is a lesser car.

The step worth paying for is xDrive, at $2,000 on a 430i. The step to think hardest about is the M440i: $15,800 over a rear-drive 430i coupe buys 131 horsepower and a genuinely quicker car, plus five pieces of equipment the 430i charges for. If those five items were on your options list anyway, the real gap is smaller than the sticker suggests. The 430i xDrive is the one built for the daily commute, and the M440i xDrive is the one built for the driver who wants the six.

2027 BMW 4 Series Trim FAQ

What is the difference between the 430i and the M440i?

Engine, mostly. The 430i uses a 255-horsepower turbocharged four; the M440i uses a 386-horsepower turbocharged inline-six and is over a second quicker to 60 mph. The M440i also makes adaptive headlights, a heated steering wheel, remote start, the rear spoiler and a power trunk release standard, where the 430i charges for them.

Is the 430i fast enough?

0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds as a rear-drive coupe. That is quicker than most buyers assume and quick enough to merge onto I-80 without thinking about it.

How much does xDrive add to a 2027 BMW 4 Series?

$2,000 on a 430i coupe, taking it from $53,300 to $55,300. It also makes the car two tenths quicker to 60 mph and costs one combined mile per gallon.

The rear-drive 430i Coupe, at an EPA-rated 28 city / 36 highway / 31 combined.

Is there a rear-wheel-drive M440i?

Yes. BMW builds the M440i in rear-wheel drive as a coupe, a Gran Coupe and a convertible, and the M440i xDrive adds all-wheel drive in each of those bodies.

Do all 2027 BMW 4 Series trims have the same interior technology?

Yes. The curved display, navigation, real-time traffic, satellite radio and in-car internet are standard on every trim, so the screen is never a reason to move up.

Which 2027 BMW 4 Series has the lowest starting price?

The 430i Gran Coupe at $51,200 before destination, which is $2,100 below the two-door coupe and the most accessible way into the lineup.
