The 2026 BMW i4 is the electric member of the 4 Series family. BMW builds it on the Gran Coupe body, lists it under the 4 Series lineup as the electrified entry, and gives it the same cabin, the same curved display and the same four-door shape as the gas car. What changes is everything under the floor: an 83.9 kWh battery, 81.2 kWh of it usable, and up to 333 miles of EPA-rated range in the eDrive40 on 18-inch wheels.

It starts at $57,900, and it is available in three forms: the rear-drive eDrive40 at 335 horsepower, the all-wheel-drive xDrive40 at 396, and the i4 M60 at 591. Here is what the i4 adds over a gas 4 Series: the electric powertrain, charging, pricing, and where it sits in the lineup. The shared cabin technology and the family's dimensions live on the 4 Series pages.

2026 BMW i4 at a Glance

  • i4 eDrive40: 335 hp, 317 lb-ft, rear-wheel drive, 5.5 sec, up to 333 miles, $57,900
  • i4 xDrive40: 396 hp, 443 lb-ft, all-wheel drive, 4.9 sec, up to 287 miles, $62,300
  • i4 M60: 591 hp, M xDrive, 3.6 sec, up to 278 miles
  • 83.9 kWh battery, 81.2 kWh usable; 16.6 cu ft trunk; 8-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty

What the i4 Adds Over a Gas 4 Series Gran Coupe

Three things, and none of them is a trim upgrade. The first is instant torque: 317 lb-ft in the eDrive40 and 443 in the xDrive40, delivered from a standstill with no gearbox in between, through a single-speed transmission. The second is that there is no fuel stop in the ordinary sense, because the car charges where it parks. The third is quiet, which changes a commute more than most people expect.

What it does not change is the practical shape of the car. The i4 carries 16.6 cubic feet in the trunk, the same as the gas Gran Coupe body it is built on, and it uses the same interior. If you liked the 4 Series Gran Coupe and want it to be electric, this is precisely that car.

2026 BMW i4 Electric Motors and Performance

The eDrive40 uses a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, producing 335 horsepower in Sport mode and 317 lb-ft, and reaching 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. The xDrive40 adds a second motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive, 396 horsepower and 443 lb-ft, and 4.9 seconds. The i4 M60 uses dual motors with M xDrive, 591 horsepower, and reaches 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

Top speeds are 118 mph for the eDrive40, 124 for the xDrive40, and 130 for the M60, rising to 140 mph with high-performance tires. All three use a single-speed transmission, so power arrives in one uninterrupted pull.

i4 Battery, Range and Charging Hardware

Every i4 uses the same 83.9 kWh battery with 81.2 kWh usable. Range depends on the model and, importantly, on the wheels you choose.

ModelWheelsEPA rangeMPGe city/hwy/comb
i4 eDrive4018-inch333 miles121 / 115 / 118
i4 eDrive4019-inch307 miles112 / 105 / 108
i4 xDrive4018-inch287 miles99 / 103 / 101
i4 xDrive4019-inch268 miles93 / 95 / 94
i4 M6019-inch278 miles99 / 96 / 98
i4 M6020-inch232 miles82 / 80 / 81

The wheel choice is worth a hundred miles across the range, so decide it on how you drive rather than on how it looks. On a 240-volt supply with the standard Flexible Fast Charger or the available BMW Wallbox, the i4 charges from empty to full in under ten hours, which is an overnight in a Fairfield garage. On a public DC fast charger, ten minutes adds 108 miles of range to the eDrive40, or 88 miles to the xDrive40 and M60.

The high-voltage battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Every i4 has regenerative braking with two Energy Recuperation Modes, and BMW's charging network now includes access to Tesla Supercharger stations using the approved DC adapter or a Supercharger fitted with a Magic Dock.

Prices are BMW's starting MSRPs and exclude destination, taxes, title and registration; the i4's destination charge is not the same as the gas 4 Series figure, and the selling price is set by the dealer. Call us for the M60, which BMW does not price on its public model page.

Where the i4 Sits in the 4 Series Lineup

Alongside it, the 2027 4 Series covers the gas cars from $51,200, in coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe bodies. The M4 is the combustion performance car, and the body-style comparison covers the Gran Coupe shape the i4 uses.

One more thing worth knowing before you buy. BMW has confirmed that 2026 is the i4's final model year: production ends to make room for the Neue Klasse i3, and we already have a page on the 2027 i3. Some buyers will want to wait for it. Others will want this one now, because a final-year car is a settled, fully developed one and the allocation is finite. Ask us about the i3 timeline and we will walk you through it.

Which 2026 BMW i4 Is Right for You?

  • Maximum range: the i4 eDrive40 on 18-inch wheels, 333 miles. See i4 inventory.
  • All-weather traction over the hills toward Napa: the i4 xDrive40, 396 hp and 4.9 seconds.
  • Outright performance: the i4 M60, 591 hp and 3.6 seconds to 60 mph.
  • The commute is short and charging is at home: the eDrive40 on 19-inch wheels still returns 307 miles.
  • You want this body with a gas engine: the 430i Gran Coupe from $51,200.

2026 BMW i4 Frequently Asked Questions

How far can a 2026 BMW i4 go on a charge?

Up to 333 miles in the eDrive40 on 18-inch wheels. On 19s the same car is rated at 307 miles. The xDrive40 covers 287 or 268 miles depending on wheels, and the M60 278 or 232.

How long does it take to charge a BMW i4?

Under ten hours from empty to full on a 240-volt supply with the standard Flexible Fast Charger or the available BMW Wallbox. On a public DC fast charger, ten minutes adds 108 miles to an eDrive40 or 88 miles to an xDrive40 or M60.

How big is the battery in a BMW i4?

83.9 kWh, with 81.2 kWh usable, and it is the same battery in all three models.

Is the BMW i4 the same as a 4 Series?

It is the electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe body, and it sits in the 4 Series lineup. It shares the shape, the cabin and the 16.6 cubic foot trunk, and has its own electric powertrain.

What warranty covers the i4 battery?

The high-voltage battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles.

Can I charge a BMW i4 at a Tesla Supercharger?

Yes. BMW's charging network includes Tesla Supercharger access using the BMW-approved DC adapter, or at a Supercharger equipped with a Magic Dock.

Is 2026 the last year for the BMW i4?

Yes. BMW has confirmed 2026 as the i4's final model year, with the Neue Klasse i3 taking its place. That makes this year's allocation finite, and it is worth a conversation about timing before you decide.

Does the i4 tow?

No. Neither the i4 nor the gas 4 Series is rated for towing; the only published load figure in the family is the M4's 1,058-pound payload capacity.
