2027 BMW 4 Series Engine and Performance in Northern California
A 255-hp four and a 386-hp inline-six, both mild hybrids for 2027. What each one does, and which belongs in your driveway.
Two engines cover the entire 2027 BMW 4 Series range below the M4: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six making 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. Both are new for this model year in one important way. Both now run a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and on the six that system is part of the quoted power figure.
This is where the 4 Series powertrain is covered in full: what each engine actually does, how the eight-speed gearbox and the xDrive system behave, the full engine-to-body matrix, the fuel economy that follows from each combination, and which one suits which driver. Trim pricing and equipment live on the trims page; dimensions live on the specs page.
The Two Engines
- 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-4, 1,998 cc, 255 bhp at 4,700 to 6,500 rpm, 295 lb-ft from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. In the 430i.
- 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-6, 2,998 cc, 386 bhp at 5,200 to 6,250 rpm, 398 lb-ft from 1,900 to 4,800 rpm. In the M440i.
- Both: eight-speed Sport Automatic, 48-volt mild hybrid, premium gasoline, 130 mph limiter.
- Quickest: M440i xDrive Coupe, 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

2027 BMW 4 Series Engine-by-Engine
The 2.0-liter four in the 430i
255 horsepower sounds modest next to the six until you look at where the torque arrives: all 295 lb-ft is available from 1,600 rpm and holds to 4,500. That is the entire range you use in traffic on Interstate 80, which is why the 430i never feels like it is working. It pulls a 3,677-pound coupe to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, 5.4 with xDrive, and returns an EPA-rated 28 city / 36 highway / 31 combined in rear-drive form. That combined figure is the best in the family by two miles per gallon and the reason the 430i is the volume car.
The 3.0-liter six in the M440i
386 horsepower at 5,200 to 6,250 rpm, and 398 lb-ft from 1,900 rpm. BMW breaks the power figure down explicitly: 375 horsepower from the combustion engine plus up to 11 horsepower of electric drive from the mild-hybrid system. That is worth knowing, because it means the last few horsepower arrive as instant electric assist rather than as revs.
The result is a car that is a second and a half quicker than the four to 60 mph while giving up only two combined miles per gallon. An M440i xDrive Coupe runs 4.2 seconds; the rear-drive M440i does 4.6 as a coupe or a Gran Coupe, and 5.0 as a convertible. The inline-six is also the reason people come looking for this car specifically: the smoothness of a straight six and the sound that goes with it.
What the 48-volt mild hybrid does, and what it does not
It smooths the stop-start, fills the gap below the turbo, and on the six it contributes up to 11 horsepower. It does not plug in, it stores very little energy, and the car has no electric-only range. If you want a 4 Series that runs on electricity, that is the i4, and it is a different car with a different powertrain.
2027 BMW 4 Series Transmissions and Drive Systems
Every 430i and M440i uses the same eight-speed Sport Automatic, with Sport and Manual shift modes, steering-wheel paddle shifters and Launch Control. Every 430i and M440i pairs its engine with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic, with paddle shifters on the wheel; the six-speed manual is the M4's own.
Rear-wheel drive is standard on both engines. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive is available on both, and the choice costs $2,000 on a 430i coupe. It also changes the car's numbers in three ways: two tenths quicker to 60 mph, one combined mile per gallon lower, and 128 pounds heavier. The xDrive cars also sit two tenths of an inch taller and turn in a two-foot wider circle.
On the roads that matter here, that trade is usually worth it. The climbs between Napa and Vallejo and the wet-season runs along Highway 12 are where xDrive makes the difference, and it removes the question entirely.

Which 2027 BMW 4 Series Engine Is Right for You?
- Daily commuting and the best economy: the 430i, 31 mpg combined and 295 lb-ft from 1,600 rpm. See 4 Series inventory.
- Year-round grip on the hill roads: the 430i xDrive, two tenths quicker and one mpg thirstier.

- Quickest without stepping to M: the M440i xDrive Coupe, 4.2 seconds.
- You want the S58 race engine: that is the M4, from 473 to 523 horsepower, and it is built for a different kind of drive.

A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-four of 1,998 cc, making 255 bhp at 4,700 to 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
What engine is in the 2027 BMW M440i?

Not below the M4. Every 430i and M440i uses the eight-speed Sport Automatic with paddle shifters. The base M4 Coupe is the one 4 Series family member offered with a six-speed manual.
How much quicker is the M440i than the 430i?
About a second and a half. An M440i xDrive Coupe runs 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds against 5.6 for a rear-drive 430i Coupe.
What fuel does the 2027 BMW 4 Series take?
Premium gasoline is recommended for both engines.
