The Basics
What the 2027 BMW i3 Is
The i3 name returns, but this car has nothing to do with the small electric hatchback BMW sold last decade. The 2027 i3 is a compact luxury electric sedan and the electric counterpart to the 3 Series, in the same way the i5 pairs with the 5 Series and the i7 with the 7 Series.
It rides on the Neue Klasse platform, which translates to "New Class," a nod to the 1960s sedans that established BMW's modern reputation. The i3 follows the iX3 as the second Neue Klasse model and the first Neue Klasse sedan. It is larger than the current gas 3 Series in every dimension: roughly 1.6 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller.

The launch model is the i3 50 xDrive: an electric motor on each axle, all-wheel drive as standard, 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. For context, that is 77 more horsepower than the M340i, the most powerful 3 Series short of an M car.
BMW has kept the chassis engineering that makes a 3 Series feel like one. The i3 uses a five-link rear suspension with an adaptive M suspension available, and the battery sits low in the floor for a low center of gravity. Four high-performance onboard computers, which BMW calls the Heart of Joy, manage the drivetrain, dynamics, driver assistance, and infotainment together rather than as separate systems. BMW has said additional variants will follow the 50 xDrive.

The 440-mile figure comes from BMW's own testing, which the company says mirrors the EPA's procedure. It is not an EPA rating, and the official EPA number has not been released. Range varies with speed, temperature, terrain, and driving style.

The cabin is built around BMW Panoramic Vision, a full-width display projected across the base of the windshield that replaces the traditional instrument cluster. A driver-angled center touchscreen runs BMW Operating System X. The dashboard is deliberately minimal, with configurable ambient lighting and slim air vents.
Because the floor is flat and the body is larger than the gas 3 Series in every direction, cabin space should improve over the current car.
