The 2027 BMW i3 is the fully electric counterpart to the 3 Series, and the second model built on BMW's Neue Klasse platform after the iX3. It launches in a single 50 xDrive trim with dual motors, 463 horsepower, 476 lb-ft of torque, and a BMW-estimated range of up to 440 miles. The gas 3 Series continues in production alongside it, so this is an addition to the lineup rather than a replacement.

The Basics

What the 2027 BMW i3 Is

The i3 name returns, but this car has nothing to do with the small electric hatchback BMW sold last decade. The 2027 i3 is a compact luxury electric sedan and the electric counterpart to the 3 Series, in the same way the i5 pairs with the 5 Series and the i7 with the 7 Series.

It rides on the Neue Klasse platform, which translates to "New Class," a nod to the 1960s sedans that established BMW's modern reputation. The i3 follows the iX3 as the second Neue Klasse model and the first Neue Klasse sedan. It is larger than the current gas 3 Series in every dimension: roughly 1.6 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller.

i3 Powertrain and Performance

The launch model is the i3 50 xDrive: an electric motor on each axle, all-wheel drive as standard, 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. For context, that is 77 more horsepower than the M340i, the most powerful 3 Series short of an M car.

BMW has kept the chassis engineering that makes a 3 Series feel like one. The i3 uses a five-link rear suspension with an adaptive M suspension available, and the battery sits low in the floor for a low center of gravity. Four high-performance onboard computers, which BMW calls the Heart of Joy, manage the drivetrain, dynamics, driver assistance, and infotainment together rather than as separate systems. BMW has said additional variants will follow the 50 xDrive.

Range and Charging

i3 Range, Charging, and Efficiency

The i3 runs an 800-volt electrical architecture, which is what enables its headline charging figure: DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. That is among the highest rates announced for any production sedan. Worth a practical caveat: public chargers capable of delivering 400 kW are still uncommon, so real-world charging speeds will depend on the station you find.

The 440-mile figure comes from BMW's own testing, which the company says mirrors the EPA's procedure. It is not an EPA rating, and the official EPA number has not been released. Range varies with speed, temperature, terrain, and driving style.

Bidirectional charging means the i3 can send power back out: to devices, to your house, or to the grid. For a Northern California owner facing summer heat and the occasional outage, a car that can power a home is a practical feature rather than a specification-sheet curiosity.

i3 Design, Interior, and Technology

The cabin is built around BMW Panoramic Vision, a full-width display projected across the base of the windshield that replaces the traditional instrument cluster. A driver-angled center touchscreen runs BMW Operating System X. The dashboard is deliberately minimal, with configurable ambient lighting and slim air vents.

Because the floor is flat and the body is larger than the gas 3 Series in every direction, cabin space should improve over the current car. Timing

i3 Pricing and Release Date

BMW has not announced pricing for the 2027 i3. Third-party estimates circulating online disagree with one another by tens of thousands of dollars, so we are not going to publish a number we cannot stand behind. When BMW releases official pricing, we will have it, and our team can tell you the moment it lands.

On timing, BMW has said production begins in August 2026 in Munich, with the first cars expected to reach dealers late in the year and to be sold as 2027 models. The i3 launches in the 50 xDrive trim, with more variants to follow.
