The 2026 BMW 3 Series and the 2027 BMW i3 are the same idea executed two ways: a compact BMW sports sedan, one with a combustion engine and one with electric motors. The 3 Series is here now, in two engines and two drivetrains, from $48,000 MSRP. The i3 is BMW's fully electric 3 Series, arriving with 463 horsepower and a BMW-estimated 440 miles of range, on the Neue Klasse platform. BMW is building both; the gas car does not go away when the i3 lands.

What follows is an even comparison, and the honest answer for most people comes down to two questions: when do you need the car, and where will you charge it? The Gas Car
2026 BMW 3 Series Overview
The 3 Series comes as the 330i, with a 2.0L TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, or the M340i, with a 3.0L M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder making 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. Both carry 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and an 8-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard; xDrive all-wheel drive is available on either for $2,000. Pricing runs $48,000 MSRP to $64,300 MSRP, and the rear-wheel-drive 330i is EPA-estimated at 28 MPG city / 35 MPG highway / 31 MPG combined. The trunk holds 16.9 cubic feet.
The Electric Car
2027 BMW i3 Overview
The i3 is the fully electric 3 Series, the second Neue Klasse model after the iX3. It launches in a single 50 xDrive trim: an electric motor on each axle, all-wheel drive as standard, 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. It runs an 800-volt architecture, accepts DC fast charging at up to 400 kW, uses a NACS charge port, and supports bidirectional charging, so it can power devices, a home, or the grid. BMW estimates up to 440 miles of range. The body is larger than the gas 3 Series in every dimension, and the cabin centers on BMW Panoramic Vision, a full-width display projected at the base of the windshield.
Two things BMW has not announced: the i3's price and its official EPA range rating. Production begins in August 2026 in Munich, with first cars expected at dealers late in the year, sold as 2027 models. Our 2027 i3 page covers what is confirmed and what is not.

Powertrain Comparison
The i3 launches above the entire gas lineup on power. The i3's 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft exceed even the M340i's 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft, and electric torque arrives instantly, with no gear to find. The 3 Series answers with breadth: two engines, a rear-drive option, and a six-cylinder that sounds and behaves like a BMW six.

Range, Fuel, and Charging
This is where the comparison gets slippery, so read the basis carefully. The 330i's driving range is arithmetic from EPA figures: a 15.6-gallon tank at an EPA-estimated 31 MPG combined works out to roughly 480 miles. The i3's 440 miles comes from BMW's own testing, which the company says mirrors the EPA procedure. The official EPA rating for the i3 has not been published. These two numbers were not produced the same way, so treat them as directional, not as a head-to-head result.

The honest practical point: a 400 kW charging rate only helps at a station that can deliver it, and those are still uncommon. Most electric ownership happens on a home charger overnight. If you have a garage or a workplace plug, the i3's charging story is excellent. If you park on the street, the 3 Series removes the problem entirely.

Pricing and Availability
A price comparison is not possible yet. BMW has not announced pricing for the 2027 i3, and the third-party estimates circulating online disagree with one another by a wide margin. We will not set a real 3 Series MSRP against an internet guess and call it a comparison. When BMW publishes i3 pricing, this page gets updated.

Where the 3 Series Wins
1. You can buy one today. The 3 Series is on our lot, with a known price. The i3 has no announced price and no confirmed arrival date at our store.
2. Refueling is a solved problem. Five minutes at any gas station, anywhere, with no home charger and no route planning. For a street-parked owner or a long-haul driver, that is decisive.
3. Rear-wheel drive and a six-cylinder. The 330i and M340i are rear-drive as standard, and the M340i's inline-six is a specific kind of pleasure. The i3 launches as a dual-motor all-wheel-drive car.
4. A lighter, smaller car. The i3 is larger in every dimension and carries a battery. The 3 Series is the more compact machine.

Where the i3 Wins
1. More power than any non-M 3 Series. The i3 makes 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft, against the M340i's 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. Electric torque arrives immediately, with no gear to find.
2. Charging technology at the front of the class. An 800-volt architecture and up to 400 kW DC fast charging, among the highest rates announced for a production sedan, plus a NACS port.
3. Your car can power your house. Bidirectional charging supports vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-grid. In a region that sees summer heat and outages, that is a real benefit, not a spec-sheet line.
4. Newer platform, more space, and no fuel stops. Neue Klasse architecture, a flat floor, larger dimensions than the gas car, BMW Panoramic Vision, and the Operating System X interface. Overnight home charging means most owners never visit a station.
